Message from the President

Osaka City University, the first municipal university to be established in Japan, celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2010. Today, it is the largest public university in the country as well as the only comprehensive university within the city of Osaka. At the time of establishing OCU’s predecessor, the Osaka University of Commerce, Osaka City Mayor Hajime Seki emphasized its mission to do creative research that should contribute to the city and its inhabitants and not just be an imitation of the national universities. His vision has been handed down and kept in honor until this very day. In 2008 professor emeritus Yoichiro Nambu, who established the Theoretical Physics Laboratory within the OCU Faculty of Science and Technology, received the Nobel Prize in Physics. In this enterprising spirit, OCU aims to nurture people who can take on leadership roles in society, conduct liberal and original research at an international level and become the pride of the city.

The objective of our educational endeavor is to cultivate talent that has both specialized and comprehensive knowledge and the qualities of understanding, insight, practicality, leadership, problem solving and virtue; people who can contribute to society with expertise of high caliber or widely applicable skills. It is my hope that students at OCU will enjoy a satisfying student life in our traditionally liberal atmosphere, meeting inspiring teachers and new friends. We wholeheartedly welcome all of those who have a curious mind, ambition and a sincere desire to study.

Dr. Yoshiki Nishizawa
President of Osaka City University
