Over the past 130 years, since the foundation in 1880 for fostering business education and research in Osaka, the Graduate School / Faculty of Business (GSB/FB) and its predecessors have sent off thousands of excellent graduates into the world of business and research. The institution has established its reputation as one of the top three Japanese business schools along with Hitotsubashi University and Kobe University.
In order to provide better educations and meet the new needs for research in today’s global markets, GSB has launched new master's and doctoral programs in April 2002 under the concept of “Global Business”. “Global”here means not only international but also inter-disciplinary. We emphasize that business knowledge is created and integrated beyond its disciplinary base, and is also extended to worldwide and focused on local matters. Hence, our “Global Business”concept aims at integrating essential elements of business society such as“internationalization and localization”or“private and public”.
In order to secure research’s creativity and flexibility, we organized our“Global Business Program” by a so-called GSB matrix which consists of subject groups and research units.
Subject groups, as the first dimension of the GSB matrix, are composed of four subjects: Management, Accounting, Finance and Distribution, and Industry and Region. Every subject provides both basic and advanced knowledge of the area. Students can choose any one as their major or minor. In the second dimension of GSB matrix, there are five research units: Strategic Management, Management Information, International Business, Industry Creation, and Public and Environmental Management. Every research unit is designed for the purpose of specialized and focused research. Students can make a variety of choices by selecting different subjects and units.
In addition, graduate students are supposed to take research methodological classes: Qualitative Methodology, Quantitative Methodology and Systems Methodology. We also provide a MBA course called“Graduate Research Project for Business Experts and Executives”. For this research project we set different research themes and assign two faculty staff every year. Each theme continues two years and usually is conducted by ten students.
