Graduate School/Faculty of Human Life Science

From Solution of Problems around us to Creation of Quality of Life

The Graduate School of Human Life Science is one of the oldest and original human life science leaders, and we will maintain that position by pioneering interdisciplinary and comprehensive research fields related to human well-being and health. We have three departments; Food and Human Health Sciences, Housing and Environmental Design, Social Services and Clinical Psychology.

Department of Food and Human Health Sciences taps into a fundamental knowledge of nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, behavioral science and nutritional epidemiology to elucidate diet and human health related factors, such as functional characteristics, preferences, and the safety of food, and thereby determines its correlation to human health. Furthermore, while shedding light on the functions of nutrient compositions and their functional mechanisms of expression within the human body, this department seeks to locate issues associated with practical activities for health promotion, thus establishing all-inclusive education and research on how dietary habits can regulate human health. While developing researchers and educators with advanced expertise through the education and research stated above, the department welcomes practical specialists such as registered dietitians and school nutritional experts to offer advanced technical education for students with full-time jobs. This kind of environment is fostered in the hopes of producing professionals who can assume leading roles in their specialized nutrition areas.

Department of Housing and Environmental Design conducts education and research with a focus on "shelter (housing)," the basis of human life, as it expands its prior research achievements into various issues associated with the interrelationships between human life and physical environment. The primary research fields of this department are: Study of Housing and Culture, Environmental Engineering in Architecture, Material Science in Environment, Study of Housing Planning, Environmental Design, and Housing Space Design. The six research fields are divided into the three stages of Application Basics, Planning Theory, and Synthesis. Application Basics comprises the Study of Housing and Culture (humanities and social sciences approach) and Environmental Engineering in Architecture and Material Science in Environment (natural science approach), and Planning Theory includes Study of Housing Planning and Environmental Design. The curriculum is made complete with Housing Space Design, which synthesizes all of them together.

Department of Human Development and Welfare consists of two courses named Clinical Psychology and Social Services. The research on developmental psychology and clinical psychology is done from the viewpoint of the life span psychology in the Clinical Psychology course. The social welfare research and the sociological study are done in the Social Services course. The specialties of the subject are composed by Developmental Clinical Psychology, Clinical Studies of Education, Social Welfare, Social Science of the Fewer Children s Society, and Social Security. The exchange with a foreign university also has doing through the execution of the international research project and the activity of the invitation of the researcher. The counseling that subject staff is doing with The Child & Family Center attached to the faculty promotes the social contribution activity of Osaka City University.
