Academic Programs

Undergraduate Courses

The Faculties and Medical School of the University provide courses for undergraduate students that lead to bachelor’s degrees. Most courses run over 4 consecutive university years (6 years in the case of the Medical School).

* Qualifications for Application
International students with different types of qualifications will need to satisfy the requirements of the relevant Faculty or School by providing evidence that their levels of achievement are of a standard comparable to that of someone who holds a school-leaving certificate granted by a Japanese high school. Further information is available from the Student Support Department, University Management Division.

Graduate Courses

The Graduate Schools of the University offer specialized study courses for graduate students that lead to master’s degrees and doctorates. Master’s degree courses normally extend over 2 consecutive university years, while doctoral courses usually require 3 years to complete. The Graduate School of Medicine offers 4-year doctoral courses only.
Master’s degrees and doctorates involve both course work and presentation of a thesis containing original research carried out by the student based on an individual project.

* Qualifications for Application
For entry to a master’s or doctoral course, an international student is normally expected to hold a recognized bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree respectively in an appropriate subject.

Non-Degree Programs of Study

Every year, the University admits students who are not reading for a degree. These non-degree students can be categorized into two types: (a) kamokuto-rishusei, students who wish to attend a limited number of courses at undergraduate or graduate level, and (b) research students, those who wish to undertake a period of study at undergraduate or graduate level under the guidance of the academic staff of OCU. It is normal for such students to enroll for one year at the beginning of the university year, in April

Instruction

Almost all teaching in the university is conducted in the national language and, as a general rule, international students are expected to be proficient in Japanese. Japanese language instruction is very limited. If you have questions, please contact the Student Support Department, University Management Division.
