The Osaka City University Hospital will establish the Advanced Medical Center for Preventive Medicine MedCity21 on the 21st floor of the Abeno Harukas Building in Osaka in April 2014. It will be the first medical center in Japan of its kind set up by a public university.

MedCity21 will make use of the highly skilled staff and advanced medical technology of Osaka City University Hospital, cooperating with regional medical care providers for the early detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer, strokes, heart diseases, diabetes, mental disorders, liver and lifestyle diseases. The emphasis of its activities will be on health screenings. Additionally, a women’s health clinic (obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology) and other specialized outpatient clinics will be available.

Depending on the examination outcome, any necessary specialized treatment can be offered by the hospital, whilst the Center will also cooperate with other regional hospitals to improve the health and life-expectancy of high blood pressure and diabetes patients. MedCity21 will function as the center of this regional health network, aiming to contribute to the realization of Osaka as a city of health.

Simultaneously, the Advanced Medical Research Center for Preventive Medicine will be established to set up and manage a bio-repository or bio-bank, containing medical data and materials such as blood, urine samples and DNA, collected from patients (with their consent) in medical examinations. The aim is to deepen the understanding of cause and effect of diseases and ultimately to improve or find new examniation methods, treatments and biomarkers, using the research and analysis potential of the Faculty of Medicine.
